Hi we will be leaving Prague and heading to Mirabor in Slovenia and would like to stop somewhere in Austria on the way down. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? Then we will be heading back to Prague from Julian Alps and would like to stop somewhere, maybe Salzburg on the way back? Any recommendations would be great.

I think you mean Maribor?
From Prague to Maribor, I think that Vienna is just about halfway and makes sense as a stopping point. If you wanted something more rural, then consider Steyr.
On the return to Prague, I think that Salzburg makes the most sense.

Make a big loop:
Prague>Vienna>Maribor>Ljubljana/Bled>Salzburg>Prague
If you're looking to spend some time in the Julian Alps, then you need to get to the Julian Alps, Maribor isn't there. Bled outside of Ljubljana is popular however further off the main highway/rail line is Lake Bohinj, which is another mountain retreat within the Julians.

Thanks all. I should have included we have already been to Vienna. We are know thinking of going to the Wachau Valley on our way down and Salzburg on our way out.
We will spend 2 days in wine country and then explore the rest of Slovenia.
