Last year I had a terrible experience in Vienna. I faced rudeness from the get go. For example when I boarded my train from the VIA airport to Graz I saw that someone has taken the seat I booked. I politely told him that's my place but and he did move to the next seat but he acted like I asked him to sleep with his wife or something. He raised his voice and started shouting "Oh it's only for a few stations, Okay I will move. OK, OK, OK, it's just for a few stops!". He got off on Wien Hbf.
I'm sorry but this is not the Vienna that I remember. The Vienna that welcomed me in 2017 with the guy at the passport check (the very first person I ever saw in Austria) greeting me with a smile as I was arriving there to change to a bus to Bratislava where I found a job. It didn't feel like the same city where in that same year I went for a weekend on a solo trip and almost had a "Before Sunrise" story of my own on the U1.
More recently I had a good experience in Salzburg in 2023. I went to Munich/Augsburg for Oktoberfest but wasn't enjoying Bavaria so I decided to book a train to Salzburg. The moment the train entered into Austrian territory I felt it. It was like someone moved a switch and the colors of nature went more alive. Like they became brighter! I enjoyed my visit to Salzburg so much that the next day when the DB train to there from Munich got delayed I seriously had a nervous breakdown.
I remember walking down the streets in Salzburg and feeling "wow those streets feel so comfortable, so light, I feel so grounded". I'm into some woo woo so I believe each country and even each town or city has its own energy to it that either agrees or doesn't with you. Hence why I can't explain how the energy in Vienna suddenly changed, maybe something in me changed for the worse? Call me mad but I felt like I knew where I was going in Salzburg, it was almost as if I had a deja vu. Mirabel Gardens, the castle, Mozart's birth house - I saw them all without using a map, just guided by my feet and my senses!
Anyway, straight to the question. Should I give Austria another chance and revisit Salzburg? Maybe we really click better with some regions/cities than others? I generally prefer visiting new countries but I feel that something is not over between me and Austria. I constantly see Austrian airline planes, and once as I was watching one lifting off in Sofia to go to VIE I saw a dove feather fall from the sky from the same direction I saw the plane. Maybe I really should revisit?
Breaking down because the DB train to Salzburg is postponed for more than an hour and I didn't get a chance to visit the city of Mozart again might have been a sign I could find something more in Salzburg perhaps? Excuse my woo woo but it's important to mention.
