I am thinking of taking a side trip after being in Greece for 2 weeks. My thought is Austria or Switzerland for 5-7 days. Originally, I am from the PNW in the US with a recent move to Texas. Since I am missing the mountains and water, I would appreciate thoughts on the best area to visit in this short amount of time. Also, this would be September so clothing items needed. Thank you for any ideas.
If you miss the mountains you could spend five nights in Switzerland's Lauterbrunnen Valley.
I will check that out. Thank you.
The Lauterbrunnen Valley is probably the most jaw-droppingly gorgeous place I've ever been in all my travels. The RS website has a page on it here and it's also very well explained in the RS Switzerland guidebook.
I was there in September as well, for one day, and my memory is that it was chilly enough for me to want my layers with me (I could see my breath in the cold when I got off the train), but also very bright and sunny, and when I was up on the cliffside walking I generally tied my outer jacket round my waist as I warmed up quite quickly. It wasn't freezing but you'll definitely want layers so you have options and flexibility.
In Austria you could look at the Kärnten Lakes region or the Salzburg lakes region. Swiming for most is a bit too cool by then and in the higher elevations you might see some early snow. Overall a nice time to be there and by mid September most school holiday periods have ended, so not as crowded.
Thank you all for the fantastic information on places to visit and weather. I am excited to make the trip.
