Shopping in Salzburg and Vienna

Will be traveling to Salzburg and Vienna late spring and am looking for wonderful shops to find locally made Christmas ornaments/decorations especially nutcrackers or smokers. Also enjoy antiques and local art. Would appreciate knowing if there are any other types of favorite shops you may know of. Will be in Vienna over a weekend if anyone knows of open markets. Thank you.

One of my all time favorite European shops is in Salzburg. I don't know the name other than Salzburg's Easter Egg store...so incredible. Over 150,000 hand painted eggs are hung throughout the store. The eggs are decorated for Christmas, Easter and other seasons. I brought home over two dozen decorated eggs and gave them as gifts to friends and coworkers. They pack them for you in egg cartons....I traveled home with no damage.
Check out Pinterest...or google the store. You will see incredible photos.

My only heads up for you is that many of the smaller traditional shops in Salzburg and possibly Vienna (haven't been there as recently) are closed on Sundays. If you have the flexibility, I would make sure you can get your shopping in on other days of the week.

In Salzburg the local decoration style are bouquet of dried flowers and spices. There are a couple of small shops in Goldgasse and in a court between Getreidegasse and Universitätplatz. Their main shop, Salzburg Blumenschössl at Eichetstrasse 9-11 is quite extensive but unfortunately out of the main tourist zone.

I suggest to visit the Austrian action house, Dorotheum, whose main seat is in Vienna at Dorotheergasse 17; in Salzburg is at Schrannengasse 7 (some walking from the center, but worth it). Top antiques shop. What are interesting are the jewelry shops - look for the sign "Einzelstücke aus Privatbesitz" - these are used jewels that were pawned but not reclaimed back; as only the most expensive pieces are auctioned, these are sold directly. You can never know what you will find, but beautiful jewels at reasonable prices in late 19th century or art nouveau style are fairly frequent.

In Austria, all shops are closed on Sundays.

"to find locally made Christmas ornaments/decorations especially nutcrackers or smokers."

They're mostly not made in Austria. I'm not going to say that nobody makes them in Austria, but the traditional areas where they manufacture these are in Baden, Saxony and Franconia.

(I frankly suspect that most of them are made in China anyway.)

I agree that the "egg shop" is not to be missed. There are eggs for every occasion--not just Easter. The eggs were about $10 each when I visited the shop. Favorite ones were Halloween themed.
