I was originally looking for a multi day guided hike in the Berner Oberland/ Lauterbrunen area but can't find the right one, so have switched to Austria. I'm fit and can hike but am older and am also not looking for mountain/alpine landscapes, I like great scenery, charming villages, cowbells, etc. My searches are leading me to these two areas. Anyone want to chime in as to which or why I would be better off choosing either area or anywhere else? I'd prefer inn to inn not center based but will take what I can get! Thanks!

Hiker's paradise is the town Seefeld in Tirol high above Innsbruck, i.e. in a plain having an elevation of 4000 ft, providing 100+ hiking routes of different length and severity.

You shouldn't have difficulties selecting hiking trails matching your requirements and your physical condition. You will also find information about guided hiking tours there.
Seefeld can easily be reached by a scenic train ride of 36 minutes from Innsbruck in case you prefer to stay in the city.

The two areas are very close, but Seefeld is much easier to reach from Munich with almost hourly direct trains via Garmisch which also call at Scharnitz. So if Munich Airport is point of arrival that might tip the balance. Innsbruck Airport is actually just south of and below the Seefeld plateau but it's flights are probably not useful to you.

I can't help with guided tours, but I have been to both areas many times. I really can't choose between them. Both are great. I think these are places to stay in one place and day hike, then enjoy a good dinner and nice hotel or holiday apartment. I drive, but the car stays mostly parked. Check bus and cable car schedules and opening times at Alm. Ehrwald, Lermoos and Biberwier are within walking distance and Berwang a bus ride away, If you are driving, the Fernpaß is getting more and more traffic. Avoid holiday travel days. From Seefeld in Tirol you might travel to Friedensglocke Mösern. You might also take a look at some of the north/south valleys in Tirol and Voralberg.

I noticed the same as mchpp - which makes me wonder why you want to hike hut to hut in the Alps
I have a favourite hotel in Seefeld in Tirol.
If your German language is decent have you thought of the Zillertal, just a couple of valleys over?

I know this isn't very clear but I guess I'm saying that I prefer the classic Alpine charm of villages and cowbells over the mountaineering and glaciers. It looks like Alpbach is also an option, any opinions there? Thanks!

Alpbachtal is very picturesque. Drove thru once years ago as it was mentioned many times in this Forum. We stayed only one overnight in September 2024 to meet some friends. We never did any hiking or go up on a lift there. Alpbach itself is known for the traditional looking wooden houses and wooden exteriors due to the building code. If you look at the village it is full of hotels and holiday apartments. Another famous ski region. How are you planning on getting there?
