Seat reservation on Vienna-Prague

We’re traveling on a Saturday in June, and I bought tickets for three passengers through the OEBB website. However, the reservation does not allow me to select any SEATS. The tickets are 1st class, Sparschiene Komfort.

Does anyone know, first, if seat reservations are necessary (I have heard that sometimes they over-book and you’re left standing...not an option we want); and second, is there any way to reach OEBB other than the phone number I’ve been calling, which is always busy: 011-43-5-1717?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience and helping me! :)

Are there no seats on the ticket? What train did you buy a ticket on, a Railjet or some other train?

I bought on a Railjet, RJX63. No seating selection was offered.

I read on Seat 61 that www.trainline.com also offered tickets - with seat options - so went on there to see if seat reservations are offered there. Nope. At the bottom they say, “No seat reservation. choose your own seat onboard”.

So, is it not possible to book a seat on these trains? Anyone? (Bueller, Bueller?) :)

Thanks!

No seating selection was offered.

That's not what I asked about. But if you have no reserved seats, it is easy buy three seat reservations for the trip.

Thank you so much for your help!

It looks like I could buy a seat reservation through May 27, but when I go to June it doesn’t allow purchase. Emily, do you think this is simply because it’s not yet three months out?

To be honest, no one travels first class on this route on a Saturday. You’ll have plenty of seats to choose from. That said, just wait a while and reserve the seats closer to your trip. You could even arrive 30 minutes early at the train station on the day of travel and reserve your seats at that point. Seat reservations are not required for this journey and the majority of travelers do not reserve a seat.

Thank you so much for the advice, and it helps to know it’s usually not necessary. I appreciate your thorough and prompt replies!

My advice is always not to jump the gun on train tickets. For travel in June you could have safely waited till the beginning of May for booking tickets. Then you would not have had issues reserving seats at the time of purchase.
