Hi all ... Wanted to check on a couple of things regarding visit to the schronnbrun palace

  1. What is the quick and cheapest mode to visit schronnbrun from state opera house area ?
  2. Is it ok to visit around 5pm ? Till what time is it open ?
  3. I found many tours of the palace...which one is the best and how much does it cost ?

Thanks

Same as above response - most of your questions can be answered on the official website...

1) Best way to visit from Opera house area is to take the U4 subway from Karlsplatz (in direction Hütteldorf) to Schönbrunn station. It takes about 10 minutes and then a few minutes walking. If you will already have a Vienna card, 24-72 hr transit pass or other transit card, this trip will be covered. If not, you can buy single tickets for less than 5 euros roundtrip.

2) I would not suggest starting your visit at 5pm unless you want only the most basic visit. You will see on the website that closing time depends on the month - in some cases, it closes at 5:30 so you wouldn't even have time to go inside. Otherwise it all depends on your interest level and schedule - I am sure some people are satisfied with 60-90 minutes here, but others could easily spend half a day or more visiting the palace, walking around the gardens, Gloriette, etc.

3) If you are visiting on your own, prices and further info (including how much time required) about the 'official' tours are listed on the website. Which is one is "the best" is totally subjective and depends on your interest level, time and budget. There are also deals if you want to visit other attractions at the palace or in Vienna, so choose what works for you.

Very easy to take the U4, exit at Schonnbrun and then walk to the palace. I had purchased my ticket in advance and heeding Rick's advice went early, say 9:30, and it was still full of people but when I left a couple of hours later it was getting extremely crowded. I didn't take a guided tour, just explored on my own--it was my last day in Vienna and I had a full agenda after that. Their website is full of all the info you'll need to plan your visit.

We took the least expensive of the guided tours and thought it was enough. We walked through the gardens on our own, and found them to be beautiful.

I was going to say that you should not forget to leave time for the gardens. When I was on the Rick Steves Berlin/Prague/Vienna tour, we went out to the palace in the AM, but we were back in Vienna in time for lunch and then toured another museum on our own in the PM. I think I snuck over to the Bahnhoff to buy my train tickets that day as well.
