Schladming to Melk and Vienna: drive or train?

We are visiting Austria in May. For part of the visit, we traded our timeshare for one in Schladming and have rented a car. We want to visit the abbey in Melk and then continue on to Vienna for two nights. According to Rick, we should "not even try" driving in Vienna, plus the cost of parking seems a bit prohibitive. Is there a station in Melk where we might leave the car for 2 nights while we are in Vienna? Or is it best to take a train the whole way from Schladming, with a stop in Melk? Thanks for any tips!

we should "not even try" driving in Vienna,

This is a bit over-exaggerated. There are about 600.000 cars registered in Vienna, and the people have to get along with the traffic. What Rick wanted to express is that a car is a burden when doing sight-seeing. Besides the costs you will lose a lot of time to find a place to park your car.

Somewhat out of the center there are at the moment 11 P+R (park and ride) garages with direct access to the subway (U-Bahn). This is intended for people living outside of Vienna who are daily commuting to work in the city. They all charge €3.40 per day only. (In the city this would be the price for one hour.)

So you can leave your car there and use public transport, which is the efficient way to move around in Vienna.
