Scheduling a week in Austria

My husband and I will be spending a week in Austria at the end of August. We will begin in Salzburg, hoping to catch the end of the Music Festival and then want to go to Hallstatt and Vienna and also include a day trip to Mauthausen. We will be traveling by train. I need some help in planning the schedule. Tentatively we plan to spend 3 nights in Salzburg, 2 in Hallstatt and 4 in Vienna. At what point would it be best to make the trip to Mauthausen?

You would start in Salzburg and then go to Hallstatt. I would suggest limiting your trip to one night in Hallstatt.

From there, take a train to Linz, and find a room for the night. The Mauthausen Camp is about 12 miles east, and it's open at 8:00a.m. It's best to take a bus to minimize the walk uphill into the camp. The walk from the train station is much farther .

Then you would catch a train into Vienna.

For the limited time you have, your trip might be more efficient if you rented a car in Salzburg and turned it in at Vienna.

Do you know how often the buses run from Linz to Mauthausen?

Personally, I would take a taxi. It is a long way up that hill from the bus stop.

From the Mauthausen website:
Taxi Brixner: +43 (0)7238 / 24 39; +43 (0)664 / 46 23 699
e-mail: taxi@brixner.at

I agree Halstatt doesn't have two nights worth of pleasure.

Mauthausen is easy from Linz - Hallstatt is out of the way and not convenient to anything (though totally 100% worth the trouble!)
