Sankt Johann im Pongau and Liechtensteinklamm

Before joining our My Way Alpine tour next May, we will be flying into Zurich, staying overnight, and then taking the train to Salzburg. We are thinking about then changing to the regional train to St Johann and staying there 2 nights so we can go to Liechtensteinklamm. Because we'll be on foot, we would like to stay near the train station, the bus to Plankenau, and places to eat. I've been looking at rooms that are about $100/night for 2 people. Is the bus the easiest way to get as close as possible? If we get to the gorge when it opens in the morning, can we expect very long lines in mid-May? I see you can get in faster with the Salzburgercard, but am not sure we'd use it for very much else. I'd appreciate any input on this plan or recommendations for lodging. Thank you.

We spent a week in Sankt Johann I'm Pongau in late May/early June this year. We had a car, so we drove to the gorge. I just looked at the Liechtensteinklamm website and they recommend taking a bus from the train station to get into town, then there is a walking path from there. It is a 20 minute walk to the entrance. The parking lot was almost empty when we were there in the afternoon so I don't see any advantage to buying a card to get in faster. What is in Plankenau?

We took the train into Salzburg one day and I didn't notice much in the way of restaurants in the train station area. It's a very small station. Since there is a bus into town, you might want to stay there. We didn't have any problem finding places to eat in town. We stayed at Alpenland Sporthotel. You can look on booking.com and other sites like that to see what's available for your dates.

Thank you, Andrea. I appreciate your help. I have looked at where you stayed, and will check it out again. It's good to know that there weren't crowds at the gorge when you were there. It sounds like there are busloads at some times, and that's not the experience we were wanting.
