Salzburg Day Trip from Munich: non-Mozart/non-S.O.M. fans

Hi, everyone! We will be in Germany this June with a 3-night stay in Munich at the end. We are debating a day trip to Austria, probably by train. We are not Mozart or Sound of Music fans, so we would not feel a need to linger at any spots / take any tours devoted to either. We like the idea of walking around Old Town Salzburg, catching great views, and perhaps absorbing some history. The lake district is appealing as well, but we want to be cautious about tackling too much in one day. Any advice?

Definitely worth a day trip. There's enough to do to fill many days but you could easily fill a day without Mozart or SOM. Train takes about 2 hours each way so an early train into Salzburg and a late train out would be a great day. There are a few museums you can visit unrelated to Mozart and SOM. We did Mozart and SOM. Beautiful churches definitely worth a visit. The Castle of course. Great views from there and another great view from Kapuzinerberg. It's a climb but but pretty. Hopefully in June you'll have sunshine/blue skies we had overcast skies. Shopping and Mirabell gardens should be in bloom. Panorama Tours offers half day bus tours to the lakes. We did this and it was a nice way to see get there within our limited time.

Salzburg has a long history that has nothing to do with Mozart and definitely not SOM. Its worth visiting just for the beautiful views and wandering the old town. Ignore the Mozart-themed candy and trinkets. Take the funicular up the hill and wander the fortress, and have a nice lunch there. Go to one of the many music events around town.

Thanks! I’m sure there are tons of things to do and see besides Mozart and Sound of Music sightseeing- just wanted to throw it out there that we would not feel any need to devote hours to Mozart/S.O.M. tours, which could free us up for other things.
