Salzkammergut: Altaussee or Obertraun?

Gruss gott!

I, my wife, and 8 year girl are going to rent an apartment Salzkammergut for 4 nights in late August. We like mountain villages with easy access to outdoor activities (hiking, biking, lakes), being able to walk to some stores, restaurants, bakeries, rent a bicycle, etc. Or girl loves going to public swimming pools and to local playgrounds. We like places that have some economy besides tourism, so maybe some farming or other small local industries. We prefer places with fewer English speaking tourist and more locals and local tourists. We like gemütlichkeit.

We will have a car.

Should we try Obertraun or the Altaussee area? There are very few apartments in Altaussee left - we'd probably actually be slightly outside the Altaussee village if we stay there.

Thank you!

This is a question like Coke or Pepsi? Both locations have their merits.

Personally, I would prefer Altaussee, it is very traditional and a bit more secluded with its lake. Nevertheless, Obertraun is less than half an hour away (by car), there are the caves and Lake Hallstatt, not to forget the town Hallstatt and the salt mines.

The best view of Hallstatt you have in the morning, when the sun is shining from SE onto the town, during a ferry ride from Hallstatt train station to the town.

There is St Wolfgang with properties on the lake front, they also have a cog rail that takes you to the top of a mountain where you can hike or train back down, there is the boat that you can ride to the different towns on the lake like St Gilgan and Strobl which would be good places to stay and they are close to Hallstatt and Obertraun with Five Fingers about 35 minutes.
