Salzkammergut - 10 days itineray

Hi,

We are planning to visit Salzkammergut from 1st July - 10th July 2018. We are flying in and out of Salzburg and our interest mainly lies in the natural beauty and mountains. Can someone please help with a 10 days itinerary. Is staying in Bad Ischl for 10 days a good idea? Or are there any suggestions to stay on top of some mountains or other places for couple of days. I am not interested much in history/cities or too many crowded places. Also, I would prefer using public transport since I am not too comfortable driving a car in a new place.

Any help around planning the itinerary is much appreciated. Thank you everyone for your help.

As a base for exploring the Salzkammergut I would not choose Bad Ischl. It is a bit secluded, and limited in public transport connections.

We had stayed more than once in Gmunden at Lake Traun. It is a bit larger town (approx. 13000 population), beautiful itself, and served us well as starting point for day trips using public transport (e.g. Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, Salzburg).

I personally like St. Gligen. It is on a lake, lots to do within walking/driving distance, and many very good restaurants.

Gmunden is on a lake, too, has also good restaurants, but has much better public transport connections.

Thank you for your replies. Can you please help me with an itinerary for 10 days? As mentioned, I would love to experience nature and mountains. Thank you.

If you want an itinerary it sounds like you don't want to just relax and explore the local area. If you don't like cities I think t.his going to be very hard to achieve without a car. I'd like to reassure you that these are easy roads to drive around, especially as you are already right hand drive (we do it and have to make the left hand drive adjustment). Gumunden is quite far East of some of the sites I would recommend, like the ice caves at Dachstein or Werfen, the salt mines at Hallein, the castle at bishopshoffen. If you stay by the lakes you won't be up a mountain. There are fantastic gorges at St Johan Im Pongau and Taxenbach. Do you want a resort style hotel in a mountain or an apartment? I enjoyed a stay in the mountain resort of Alpendorf near St Johan Im Pongau but it's hotel dominated.

@ryanandgill
The places you are suggesting are worth visiting, but not in the Salzkammergut which the OP wants to explore.
