Hello everyone -
We will be in europe in July with our 7 kids, and will be spending 2 days in Salzburg. Are there any must-see sites for kids (we are planning on Sound of Music tour)? Thank you so much and have a great day!
The Sound of Music tour will be great. If it's not part of your tour, don't miss the Dwarf Garden in Mirabell Gardens -- try to find the dwarf from the movie!
Schloss Hellbrunn has a garden with trick water fountains -- good for a hot day if you don't mind getting wet.
I think the fortress is a must-see. It is so old and enormous. Views from the fortress are pretty spectacular, too.
The Salzburg Marionette Theatre is really impressive. The Sound of Music is performed in English. All other shows are in German with simple English translations projected onto the walls on either side of the stage to help non-German speakers follow the story line.
Enjoy your trip! You are to be commended for taking 7 kids to Europe.
Here are three suggestions for having fun with children:
The "Trick Fountains" at Hellbrunn Castle:

A ride with an amphibian bus, i.e. both on the streets and on the river:

The famous zoo:

We used our Salzburg pass that included transportation to ride the cable car and then stopped at Hellbrunn on the way back to town, all by bus and very easy and convenient. I think the zoo is near Hellbrunn but not positive. The cable car and the fountains were fun for us and I imagine the kids would enjoy it too. Have a safe trip.
There is a toy museum in the very centre. If you move to the outskirts, there is an open air museum with its own little railway (but it is a bit difficult to reach without a car). The fountain tricks at Hellbrunn are also very amusing, but be ready to get out completely wet.
