Salzburg: Two days or three?

We are building our itinerary for a trip to Austria and are wondering how much time we should budget for Salzburg? Prior, we’ll be visiting Vienna, the Wachau Valley and Hallstatt, and we’ll be moving on to Innsbruck and the Tirol afterward.

We were thinking one day for the Altstadt and another for the sites above and outside town, including Monchsberg, Hohensalzburg Fortress, and maybe Hellbrunn Palace & Gardens or Mirabell Palace & Gardens. Is this too ambitious? Should we add another day? We don’t like to race from site to site, and like to make the occasional stop at a café or coffeehouse.

2 days is fine for what you have planned. Add a day if you do a salt mine tour or the ice caves in Werfen

Mirabell and Hohensalzburg are in the center of Salzburg so can easily be combined in one day with a stroll around the Altstadt (very small).

I would suggest and highly recommend Hellbrunn for the second day along with maybe a SOM tour.

We spent an afternoon and night in Salzburg back in July 2017 and that was enough for us - so I'd do 2 days rather than 3. Its a great place to stroll around and drop in the churches as we did during the Rick Steves walk. Mozarts Geburtshaus is worth a visit as well. As I recall they kind of roll up the sidewalks after dark (it was a Thursday night).

Thanks all! We're planning to hit Werfen on our way to Innsbruck and some hiking in the Tirol. Sounds like two full days in Salzburg is enough. Thank you.
