hi guys
we are group of 5 friends and we will spend 3 days/ 2 nights in salzburg coming from munich ( Train)
I am lost of what should we do whether rent a car or use train or take local tours
we are interested in Hallstat and all the lake district area ( lakes and mountains), We wanted salt mines and check some of Sound of Music locations like Mondsee , Werfern, Schafbern and Rossfeld.
Please what's your advice , can u suggest an itinerary???
my plan 1
take a tour first day to lakes and mountains
second day hallstat and sound of music tour

or second plan
day 1: rent a car and go to hallstat and stop on the way at st Gilgen
day2: take a tour either to sound of music and salt mines or to KRIMML WATERFALLS
day3: take a Großglockner Tour

In 2009 went from Salzburg Hbf to Mondsee, spent some time there, looked at the church, had a Sacher Torte, then went on to Bad Ischl via St. Gilgen with a bus change on Wolfgangsee. From there I went to Lahn (Halstatt). I did this all by bus. You can get the schedules, I believe, on the Austrian Rail website (they don't just show trains).

Finding the fares is more complicated, but they are not that much. In 2009, I spent 8,50€ from Salzburg to St. Gilgen via Mondsee, then another 8,80€ to Hallstatt via Bad Ischl. The part from Bad Ischl to Lahn by bus was 4,10€ then. If you go by train from Bad Ischl to the Hallstatt Bahnhof today, it's 4,20€.

St. Gilgen is on one end of Wolfgangsee, St. Wolfgang is in the middle. I think you mean the Schafberg (not Schafbern). The incline RR to the top starts in St. Wolfgang.

Werfen, by the way, is in the completely opposite direction from Mondsee and Wolfgangsee.

If you rent a car, then I would probably keep it for all three days. Of course, you'll need a pretty big car. A one-day rental can be expensive, unless there's a last-minute discount on whichever cars are "left over."
