Salzburg to Vienna via Train - any necessary stops between?

Hi all,

First, I must warn you we've already planned to take a day trip from Vienna to Melk to ride bikes down the Danube, so we will intentionally NOT stop in that area on the way from Salzburg on this particular ride).

Also, I will have a 6 and 10 year old with me, so we will skip Mauthausen on this trip.

Anything else close to a station we can stop, lock up our bags and see? (Must See?)

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

I would suggest Linz, a province capital, on the Danube. The Zentrum is interesting in terms of architecture. Historically, Linz was the point from which US troops in WW 2 were not to advance further, ie, leave it to Soviets. I like Linz, have been there a few times on day trips. Yes, it has tourists, mostly German, but not swamped compared to Salzburg.

@ Melissa...You're welcome.

Linz is the province capital of Upper Austria (Oberösterreich), has a number of historical memorials on churches, the war memorial on Austrian military history near the Zentrum, the memorial plaque (Gedenkstein) on the Nibelungen Bridge on the mass of refugees from Czechoslovakia from 1945-48. plus Mozart's house if you're interested in Mozart, where he lived and wrote the "Linzer Sinfonie." (Symphony #36)

Do you have a ticket that will allow you to leave one train and then get back on another? Personally, I don't think anything in between Salzburg and Vienna are nearly as impressive as Salzburg and Vienna, so I'd just sit tight until Salzburg and enjoy all the time you have there and in surrounding areas such as Wolfgangsee.
