Looking at 2 or 3 nights in Salzburg then driving to Vienna for 3 nights.
I would be interested in detouring to Braunau am Inn then driving to somewhere like Hallstatt for one night.
The next day driving to Mauthausen to tour and possibly onto Melk touring and staying for one night.
Next day drive onto Vienna and drop off car.
Does this look feasible and not too rushed or should i add an extra night ?

From Salzburg to Vienna is just a 185 mile trip via motorway, and can be reached in 3 hours.
You'd do best to first catch Hallstadt, a short distance east of Salzburg and to the south a little.
Mautenhausen is just east of Linz.
Braunau am Inn is the next city on your route.
And Melk is about 20 miles east of Braunau going toward Vienna.
The time spent in route would depend on what you intend to do at each stop. I would think 2 days would be sufficient time to see these sights as a tourist.
I think two days and two nights en-route is enough time. On Google Maps, I see Braunau am Inn north of Salzburg, which is not where I thought it was per David's suggested route.

Yeh i've looked, i would be heading north first but it all seems fairly leisurely, i'm sure we could find some nice stops along the way.
