salzburg to vienna

We will be driving from Salzburg to Vienna and want to stop for the evening at approximately the half way mark. Is Melk the best place to spend the night (and visit the Abbey) or are there alternatives? Thanks.

You can also consider the lively university city of Graz, which would give you a more scenic drive. Perfect city for an overnight stop, as it's attractive but not so loaded with sites that you need to spend more than one night.

I like Graz very much, but unfortunately is not on the route between Salzburg and Vienna....

I would suggest Melk. We stayed at the White Lamb inn in downtown Melk last week and thought it was perfectly fine. Depending on how early you start and your interests, you could stop in Linz or Mathausen and with a car, I would drive part of the Wachau Valley for a heuriger for some evening entertainment after checking in at your hotel in Melk. The heuriger were closer to Krems but it is a fast drive and easy too get back to Melk.

Hi John, we were just at Melk a few days ago. We stayed at the Hotel zur Post which also has an excellent restaurant (indoors towards the back of the building) and good breakfast.

While I think that Melk (or the Wachau region) is a nice alternative, it is more at the 3/4 mark. I would also say that this is so easy to do from Vienna, it might be better as a day trip.

As an alternative, I would suggest the town of Steyr. A lovely, older small town off the beaten path. Also have a look at Enns.

We did 12 days in Austria/Germany last Sept by train but wanted to drop in and say that we spent a weekend in Krems and ran a marathon on the road from Emmersdorf to Krems. I found the area breathtakingly beautiful and the people wonderfully charming. Austria really captured my heart and I would love to return someday.
