Salzburg to Prague

Adult son, husband and I are traveling early Oct. renting a car. Staying about 4 days in Salzburg, then taking 2 days to travel to Mauhasen, Melk Abbey and perhaps Krems, then onto Vienna (4/5 days) and to Prague (3/4 days). We are planning on dropping the car in Vienna, but was wondering if we should drop it in Krems and bus/train/boat to Vienna. How should we go from Vienna to Prague--train?

Yes, a car in Vienna would be just an expensive burden. Vienna to Prague is by frequent trains.

Yes...definitely drop the car before you get to Vienna...you won't be able to use it at all since there is no easy parking in the area of the city where you will go to see all the sights. It's an easy walking city and not too big - great tram and metro system to get around anywhere you want. The same holds for Prague...no use for a car and a relatively small city that's easy to walk! Efficient metro and tram here as well. Don't waste money on gas, and parking for a car...plus you'll have a very significant drop-off fee for picking it up in Austria and dropping it in the Czech Republic.
