we are travelling from Salzburg on June 2, 2015 going to Munich and would like to know the best way? What about romantic road bus?
For me, the best way is a Meridian train because its the cheapest and fairly quick and direct. 21 euro for the first person and 5 euro for each additional person up to 5 total traveling. Good after 9 am M-F, all day weekends.
The fares Sam mentions are with a Meridian Guten-Tag-Tagesticket - regional trains after 9 AM. A very good deal.
The Romantic Road is on the far (west) side of Munich. Not a very good way to get from Salzburg to Munich.
If you go to Salzburg train station and ask for the cheapest or next-departure group ticket to Munich, I'm sure they will sell it to you reliably. Trains depart 1 - 3 times per hour and take 1.5 - 2 hours.
Are you a group of less than six people? If so I can pretty much assure you that the Meridian Guten-Tag-Ticket is the least expensive ticket for Salzburg to Munich if you leave after 9 AM on a work day, any time on a weekend day. I haven't been in Salzburg since Meridian took over the regional trains, but last time I was there I noticed that the ÖBB (Austrian Rail) automats were selling the Bayern-Ticket. The Bayern-Ticket at an automat costs 2€ more than the Guten-Tag-Ticket at an automat, but if you buy the Guten-Tag-Ticket at the ticket counter, they will charge you 2€ more for personal service, so you might as well try an automat. If it only sells the Bayern-Ticket, you won't lose anything, but if iy sell the Guten-Tag-Ticket, you'll save.
I don't know if Meridian has their own automats in the Salzburg station. There website does not indicate that they do, but if the Guten-Tag-Ticket is not sold in ÖBB automats, you might look for one. Normally all automats are grouped together.
