This September we will be staying a few days in Salzburg then driving to Lucerne and need advice as to a town to stay in for one night approximately half way between the two cities. And suggestions for lodging as well. Thanks so much!

I would suggest Lindau by lake Konstanz, or Füssen by Neuschwanstein Castle.
But it is perfectly doable in a single day if you need to.
Question, though: is it an Austrian or German rental car? If so, do you plan to drive back to the country where you picked it up?
If not, brace yourself for huge drop off fees... And consider taking the Railjet Express from Salzburg to Zürich, followed by a 1 hour train ride to Luzern (or a Swiss rental car if needed).

We are renting a car in Munich and yes we are returning it to Munich - changed all our plans when we heard the drop off charges! Thank you for the suggestions

This doesn't answer your particular inquiry, but we did Salzburg to Luzern in one day via train. It was relatively easy and then perhpas you would do less hotel switching and Luzern is a stunning city to stay in.
