Salzburg to Königsee

What is the best way to get to Königsee from Salzburg? We will be in Salzburg November24- December 6. Many years ago I visited
the beautiful Königsee and St. Bartholomä, and would like my husband to see it. How is the best way to get there, and from where does the boat take off? We won't have a car, so it would have to be train or bus, and the most direct way would probably be best.
Thank you!

There is an hourly bus (#840) from Salzburg Hbf to Berchdesgaden, that connects to another bus (#841) to Koenigssee.

I'd buy a BGL Tagesticket Bus & Bahn (Berchtesgaden day ticket bus & train) for €12, children up to 14yo free. It includes the bus to the Königssee and gives you a small discount on the Köngissee boats. Moreover, if you plan to spend the evening in Berchtesgaden, you can take the train back to Salzburg, which operates till 10pm, while the last bus (aka »Watzmann Express«) departs just after 6pm. You can buy the ticket from the bus driver in Salzburg or from the ServiceCenter in the Salzburg Lokalbahnhof (Südtiroler Platz, in front of the station).

One of my favourite places. The last time I went was on a Sunday at the end of a September and it was deathly quiet on the first boat. If you are up to it, there are some nice wooded hiking trails around St Bartholomew and a splendid little walk from the ferry stop at the top of the lake to Rothbach Falls – the falls are not overly impressive but Lake Obersee (the next lake over) provides some nice photo opportunities. Reward yourself with a beer or two, or mulled wine, before your return.

I don’t know what it’s like that time of year but there a number of restaurants on the Schonau lakefront. You can make a full day of it, the Jennerbahn and view from the top are very much worthwhile, better still if you hike all the way up.

Appreciate all the good comments! It IS a beautiful place...I was last there in 1969 (!) in June or July and it was deathly quiet then, too. Very peaceful. I'll keep all this info for when we need it.
