kathi,

While it would be possible to travel from Salzburg to Hallstatt for a day trip to see the Salt Mines, it's going to be a long day trip. The rail trip from Salzburg will take about 2.5 hours in each direction, with one change at Attnang-Puchheim. When you arrive at the small station in Hallstatt, you'll have to walk down to the lake, take a short ride on Stefanie across to the town (~15-20 minutes), walk to Lahn at the far end of town (~15 minutes), take the Funicular up to Rudolfsturm (~10 minutes) and then walk up through the woods to the Salt Mine entrance (~15 minutes). After you've toured the Salt Mine, reverse the procedure.

Is there a reason you're not interested in a tour? I believe Bob's Special Tours offers a tour to Hallstatt, so you could have a look at that also.

If you're just interested in a Salt Mine tour, you could also have a look at the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine. It doesn't have quite the history of the one in Hallstatt, but it's much closer to Salzburg. You can easily take the DB Bus from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden. There are also some good WW-II historic sites in Berchtesgaden, including the Eagle's Nest.

If you're set on seeing the Salt Mine in Hallstatt, staying there for at least one night is a better idea.

There's LOTS to see in that area!

If you go to the salt mine (Salzbergwerk) in Berchtesgaden, it's about 3 stops before the Berchtesgaden Hbf on the bus (RVO 840, Watzmann Express) from Salzburg. The Walzmann Express leaves hourly from Karl-Wurmb-Straße, on the north side of the plaza in front of the Salzburg Hbf, between the Forum buildings. It goes through town, stopping at Mirabell Platz and the old town end of Mozartsteg before heading for Berchtesgaden.

A TagesTicket for the RVO, for 9,80€/adult will cover the round trip bus plus unlimited travel on most buses in Berchtesgaden.

There is also the salt mine at Hallein. The Salzburg train station sells a combination train/admission ticket.
