Salzburg to Budapest

I have 5 free nights between Salzburg and Budapest. Some options are Hallstatt, Cesky Krumlov, Melk, Györ and/or combination of those. I have already spent considerable time in Vienna and don't feel the need to return. I will be traveling in June using public transportation and prefer to avoid 1-2 nights stopovers.

You are considering Hallstatt, Cesky Krumlov, Melk, Györ, but want to avoid 1 or 2 night stop overs? All of those are 1 or 2 night stops at best. None is central to the others so to make staying one place and visiting the others.

How about you go to Budapest, then split your stay in Budapest with 3 nights in Pecs or Eger?

James has given you a great idea. I spent two long weekends in Budapest last September. In between, I spent 2 nights in Pecs, then one each in Szeged and Kecskemet, traveling with just a backpack by bus and train. I loved seeing these small gems and getting away from the big cities. Having only a small pack made those 1- and 2-nighters easy, not at all tiring and all three cities are very walkable, just took (cheap) taxis to/from the stations, rather than getting lost.

Thanks James E. and Chani for your suggestions. Chani, I remember reading your trip report last year and how much you enjoyed traveling light to Pecs, Szeged and Kecskemet. It sounded lovely. I'll be there in the summer and I'm little concerned about the heat and taking overnights/daytrips.

Weather's unpredictable. June is probably similar to September - my trip was second half of September. I was quite happy with all my hotel choices, so if you want recommendations, PM me.
