Salzburg to Berchtesgaden - Day Hike Jennerbahn

I am planning on doing a day trip from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden at the end of May and would like some help confirming logistics. I would like to do a long day hike, leaving time for enjoying a beer at the top as well. From what I have read, it seems that Bus 840 leaves from the Salzburg Hauptbahnhof and will go to Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof. How do we get from the bus station to the trailheads? From there, which hike would you recommend that we do (we are both active hikers, so elevation and length doesn't matter)? We don't mind a long day, but would want to be back down on the mountain in time to get back to Salzburg. Any suggestions or help with this would be great. Thanks!

I'm not sure where the trail head is at the Jennerbahn, but the base station for the cable car is right near Königssee. Bus 841 goes approximately every hour from in front of the Berchtesgaden Hbf to the Jennerbahn. Here (pp 3 & 4) is the schedule. Note: ZOB/Berchtesgaden Hbf is the bus station at the train station in Berchtesgaden.

Years ago we hiked from the Jennerbahn middle station down to the Königssee where the Kesselbach meets the lake (Bedarfshaltestelle Kessel). We flagged a Königssee boat with the special colored metal signal panels there and the full boat landed just for us and took us to St. Bartholomä. There was a Berghütte along the way Königsbachalm, and we got some lunch and a butter milk. It was kind of neat getting picked up by the boat. Of course you have to pay the boat fare. The hike was not too difficult. With the lunch break I think it was around four hours hike, then you have to add the boat trip and the walk back to the Jennerbahn parking place or bus stop. #9 at the link below.

"the full boat landed just for us"

That's what a Bedarfshaltestelle is - a stop where the train, bus, boat only stops on request.

There's a trail head right by the base Jennerbahn station. I hiked from the middle station to the top, and it took about two hours or so. The views from the top of Jenner are probably some of the best in the area... and there's a mountain restaurant where you can drink your beer. I tried to take the route down to the boat stop mentioned by the other poster, but took a wrong turn and ended up back at the Jennerbahn base station. It took me around 90 minutes to descend the mountain.

will go to Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof. How do we get from the bus station to the trailheads?

Lee mentioned the bus from the Hauptbahnhof to the village of Königsee, and the Jennerbahn base station is right there. For an alternative hike, there's also a trail that goes around the side of Königsee (the lake, not the village) to St. Bartolomä. I didn't hike this trail, but from what I saw on the topographic maps, it doesn't ascend above the Alpine level. Therefore, I wouldn't expect the scenery to be as impressive. St. Bart's also has a restaurant, so there's a beer waiting for you there too.
