Salzburg to Basel

I am going from Salzburg to Basel Switzerland in June. The flights all have more than one stop and take hours. Trains are over 7 hours. How is the best way to get to Basel in the least amount of time?

The best and fastest way to get from Salzburg to Basel is by train. There are several connections that take around 6:30 with one change. And as a bonus you'll get some amazing views of the Alps.

Train to Zurich, then train to Basel, 6 1/2 hours. It is 540 km (335 miles). If you have access to a helicopter, you could make it in a couple of hours.

Thanks for the reply. We can get to Innsbruck from Salzburg but can’t find trains from Innsbruck to Zurich.

We thought about going to Innsbruck for one night from Salzburg on our way to Basel. I can find trains fine to Innsbruck but not from Innsbruck to Basel ( via Zurich). Is it even worth it go to Innsbruck for one night or more scenic if we forgot Innsbruck and went straight to Zurich from Salzburg? Then onto Basel.
Thanks Badger

You are not telling us your travel dates, so we cannot check. Looking at June 20, I see trains at 7:56, 9:56, 11:56 on that itinerary, as well as others with more connections.

warenow, I interpret your results so far as a suggestion that these two cities do not pair well for the vacation you are currently planning. BTW, you can't make serious plans on Google Maps, but it suggests that you can also travel via Munich, and even via Karlsruhe, still in the 7 to 8 hour range. I enjoyed a nice drive from Zurich to Basel once, with a few nice stops, like Stein am Rhine, Aarau, Augusta Raurica, and the Vitra Design Museum. But I was taking the car back to Zurich.

When we were younger, we did a two-week vacation as Innsbruck (via Vienna air change on Austrian Air)-Salzburg-Munich-Vienna, and home. You can't spend too many days in Vienna. How many days are you spending in Salzburg?

We were in Salzburg last year in May but were called home for an emergency so only had 2 days. We will be staying 3 nights in Salzburg and then have two days before we have to be in Basel. We saw Lucern, Bern and other beautiful cities in Switzerland.

Again, for May 2, I see trains at 7:56, 9:56, 11:56 Salzburg to Zurich with a connection to Basel in 6 1/2 hours, as well as others with more connections.

The train line between Innsbruck and Zurich is supposed to be quite scenic and goes via the Arlberg Pass. Read more at seat61.

Where are you looking for train times, as there are plenty of trains from Salzburg to Basel (and from Innsbruck to Basel). With train travel you plan your trip end-to-end on one of the railway's own website. Best here is www.oebb.at

There you can plan your trip, and you do not have to make any a priori assump[tions on the route. Just enter "Salzburg" and "Basel" and let the system do it for you. You will see that there are trains every 2 hours. With such a convenient schedule it is not a surprise that there are no convenient flights...
