As part of a 17 day trip to Barvaria and Slovenia this next August with 3 adults and 2 younger teens, we have 3.5 days to stay in or near Salzburg. We hope to do day trips to Berchtesgaden, Werfen, and St. Gilgan/Wolfgansee/Schafburg. I am wondering where to stay as our home base for this portion of our trip. We have a rental car booked already, so we can drive for day trips. If anyone knows of a great hotel or apartment rental that would make sense for this region, please let me know. Thanks!
When I was there with a friend a while ago, we stayed at Pension Ballwein on Moosstrasse, which sat on the very edge of Salzburg on Moose. It made it an ideal stay for someone with a rental car, as there was plenty of parking at the pension. Plus we were able to leave our car at there when we went into the city proper. So instead of having to drive into the congested city center, we got a bus right off across the street, which took us there in about 10 minutes. It was nice because we didn't have to deal with parking in town, but we were able to use our car for day trips.
The pension was quite charming with lots of kitschy touches that were very Austrian, and the beds had very fluffy comforters and pillows. But the best was the view. Our room had French doors that opened onto a balcony, which gave way to an incredible vista of the Alps. It was really beautiful.
I believe they now have apartments as well as rooms. https://www.pension-ballwein.at/en/
Mardee,
This looks wonderful. Sadly, they are fully booked in August. I'll keep looking though!
With a car... Gasthof Auzinger in Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden, Germany. They see to be always full nowadays. We have stayed at the Stallerhof above Kuchl, Österreich and would go back. Just above it the Hochreithalm Golling had good food. I've never been here, but I'm pretty sure Rick was years ago in one of his videos of the area. The Kendlhof in Werfenweng. A fallback that we have visited over the years is Hotel Garni Hanauerlehen in Schönau am Königssee. They have changed over the years, but the view is great and the Königssee is within walking distance. Unterartenreitlehen apartments in Schönau am Königssee too. I've never stayed here but the food was good. Alpengasthof Vorderbrand, Schönau am Königssee. I generally use P+R Süd to park the car for Salzburg. P+R Combination Ticket: € 15.00. The combination ticket is valid for parking and as a day ticket for up to 5 people traveling together on all trolleybus and bus lines within the city. If you stay off the Austrian Autobahns there is no need for a vignette.
Allow time for Salzburg itself in your planning.
If the Wolfgangsee area is a must, stay in Salzburg. A friend of mine stayed at the Hotel Amadeo (has parking). We walked down the Hellbrunner Allee this year, which leads from Hellbrunn Palace (worth a vist) to downtown Salzburg.
Werfen Castle and the ice caves close by makes for a good trip.
Re Berchtesgaden, if pushed for time, not the town itself; salt mine, Eagle's Nest, Ramsau Wimbachklamm and St Sebastian Church. The tops for me would be getting to Königssee for the first boat.
You are already running out of time.
Try to see if there is a ferienwohnung ( holiday apartment ) - preferably one on a farm ( or former farm ) outside the city. More likely to be able to sleep 5, more room, cheaper. I stayed at one in nearby Anthering. Unfortunately it looks like they have discontinued service.
