We are planning a trip to Salzburg this coming summer with our grandchildren. How safe is Salzburg now? Is it safe to walk the streets at night? We are looking at Altstadthotel Kasererbräu. How good is this hotel?
I will be going to Salzburg in May and have not yet been there, but my educated guess is that I will feel much safer there than I do here. I intend to take twilight and night time photos by myself and have no worries about my safety. Hopefully others who have actually been there will chime in.
We were there in the 80's and it was a great place to visit. We will first spend 3 days in Kitzbuhel in the mountains before we go to Salzburg.
We were there last September (2016) and I felt very safe. We walked so many places including to/from dinner and I felt safer than I do walking in the United States at night. I have found this true around Europe -- walking in Paris at midnight, Vienna after the opera, around Berlin or London. Of course it is wise to always be aware of your surroundings, but personal safety was not a problem for us.
Going next week for our third visit over the last 6 years -- feel safe day or night. No information on the hotel. We have stayed at Goldenes Theater Hotel, across the river from Altstadt.
We've been 4 times including a few late night walks and have always felt very safe!
How safe is Salzburg NOW? As opposed to WW2?
Salzburg is probably one of the safest places in the entire world. I guarantee you it is much safer than your hometown.
I wouldn't worry about safety in Salzburg at all. Walked all about during the evening and night hours and never felt unsafe. Can't say the same for most cities in the U.S.
We were there not long ago, stayed out until the wee hours every night walking around, and had zero concerns for our safety. Never saw anyone who gave us pause or made us feel like we needed to be on our guard. No worries whatsoever.
TripAdvisor is always a good place to look for reviews. For the hotel you named: https://www.tripadvisor.com/HotelReview-g190441-d235557-Reviews-AltstadthotelKasererbraeu-SalzburgAustrianAlps.html
I've read that one of the biggest dangers in Salzburg is dropping a beer stein on your foot. Be careful out there!
I have stayed in Salzburg four times, last time was 2015 and we walked to dinner at night and always felt safe as we have in the rest of Austria.

We were in Salzburg in 2016. It was a wonderful place to walk, regardless of the hour.
I assume that every city has areas where it's not as safe at night, but we felt fine everywhere we went in the city during our several days there.

Winner of the response of the day!
Tetonrr, wherever you travel including a trip to your local mall parking garage at night, always be aware of your surroundings.
USA is #1 vs Austria t #13:

I've been in Salzburg a number of times, and have never felt any concerns about safety, even when walking about in the evening. There are never any guarantees, but I doubt you'll have any problems there. As the others have pointed out, it's probably safer than your hometown.
Your hotel appears to be in the old town, on the same side as the Hohensalzburg Fortress. That's a nice area with lots of restaurants and there are usually lots of people in the streets at night. I've been using a hotel on the other side of the river and have never felt unsafe at any time.
No safety issues at all. Standard precautions as always.
I guess that with much effort and research you may even find some place in Salzburg not safe at night, but they hid it quite well.
Why is everyone commenting on a post that is five months old?
What do you mean, Emily? Everyone? Only lachera commented in May. The rest commented in December. Besides they are going to Salzburg this summer so they can still use the advice.
There have been about five recent responses that are now removed. Just weird to keep banging on months later about how safe Salzburg is.
