Salzburg Rental Cars

We are renting a car in Salzburg for two weeks. The options seem to be the main car companies and some off brands. One company called MegaDrive offers CDW insurance included whereas companies like Budget want $30 per day for CDW. First is it necessary? Are the off brand companies reliable? I know we can also get secondary insurance through Allianz but does not cover CDW. Thanks

Check with AutoEurope. I last went thru them and picked it up at Hertz. Their locations are in most cities.
Rental car companies are not all created equal in Europe--even some of the big name rental companies you're familiar with cause trouble to customers.
Check with your home insurance agent to see if your regular insurance policy is effective on rental cars in Europe. And check with your credit card to see if it covers you on rental cars in Europe. If not going into Italy, you may not need to purchase CDW.
Are you returning the car in Austria? Many renting in Salzburg will be flying out of Munich, and that would require paying big money to return the car to Austria. Some might take the train over into Germany to rent there if returning the car in Germany.

Thanks. Yes we will rent in Salzburg and return in Innsbruck. I will check with my insurance company as well.
We currently are booked through Kayak with Budget.

I have had good experiences with Megadrive that I was linked to through a broker (Argus). But the reviews online are not very good or at least were not some time ago.

Hi cpk. From my experience:
- your personal car insurance probably does not cover rentals outside the US.
- most credit cards provide free primary CDW for rentals in Europe. Check with your credit card company, and if you don't already have a written copy of coverage details, ask them to email you one, or where you can view it online.
- using your free credit card insurance will likely save you a lot of money vs. paying for CDW. The trade off is that if you do need to make a claim, it will involve some additional paperwork and waiting for your claim to be processed.
Enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the helpful comments. We have booked through Auto Europe with Europa car rentals. They include CDW. Between this and credit cards, we should be OK. If anyone has had a bad experience with Europa car rentals, please let me know. Thanks again.
