salzburg quick stop

hello:

We are planning a christmas trip and have a leg from nuremberg to vienna... I was thinking maybe of stopping in salzburg just for 5-6 hours on the way. This will be on Dec. 20. I have never been.

Do you think that it is worth it to just stop off, maybe have lunch, see the Christmas market and take in the atmosphere? (Our other stops are all big cities and we will be in each for 3-4 nights).

Is there luggage storage at train station? Actually, I can probably look that one up!

Thanks!
Kim

Yes, Salzburg train station has luggage lockers.

Yes, Salzburg old town is compact, walkable, and charming to see for half a day. There's no "cost to you" other than one train connection and a bit less time in another destination.

Definitely stop! Salzburg is magical at this time of the year and it is small enough that you will enjoy your short visit.

Definitely stop.
Leave the luggage at the lockers, take a bus (or walk) to Mirabell gardens (and pass one of the first Christmas markets), got through the gardens, walk over the bridge, enter Getreidegasse head for the cahtedral and at Residenzplatz enter THE Christkindlmarkt. It will be packed, and there are several food stands. You can have kaiserschmarrn, baked potatoes, all kind of sausages.
Dress warmely, have money/smartphone/passport close to the body, and enjoy!
