Hi
We will be doing a daytrip to Austria from Munich. I have been reading that the crowds have been crazy in Salzburg. I am now rethinking that maybe we should check out a different area. I am most interested in being close to the mountains. I don't want to deal with wall to wall people at the markets. Do you think Innsbruck might be less crazy? We leave next week so I am trying not to panic. ;) TIA
Salzburg is a beautiful place and I think a daytrip is easy and doable. I've never been to the Weihnachtsmarkt there. Innsbruck is in the north middle of the Alps on the Inn river. Snow is more likely. I've visited the many Innsbruck Weihnachtsmarkts during the day. I never felt that they were overcrowded then. I usually stay outside the city in the Stubaital.
Salzburg is easily reachable from Munich, whereas travel time to/from Innsbruck is considerably longer. Daylight is short at this time, and I guess you would not want to spend the half day in a train.
Not sure when you are going?
I'm in Salzburg now and it's not crowded like that.
Nearby Salzburg is Berchtesgaden, Germany which is wonderfully lower key than both Salzburg and Innsbruck.
