Planning to travel via car from Munich to Salzburg in July 2017 and are thinking about visiting Berchtesgaden/Eagles Nest on the way. Since we will be leaving Salzburg the next day, will our time be better spent in Berchtesgaden or Salzburg?
The answer to this would depend on what your interests are - historical perspective or beautiful views . Your response would inform my answer .
It's just a 2 hr. drive from Munich to Salzburg. Berchtesgaden is just south of Salzburg, and you could easily drop by for a quick visit.
The Austrian Alps are incredibly beautiful and one of my favorite trips is to ramble from village to village.
Are you saying that you are driving from Munich to Salzburg, and then leaving the next day? So you only have part of a day? Salzburg is a beautiful city full of history and art. Berchtesgaden is a lovely town, with things to see, but not a place you can just drive through, or see in an hour or two, just to sleep in Salzburg.

Historical.
I spent 2-3 hours in the Documentation Center - very well done and very interesting, lots of details and explanations about the rise of Nazism . Especially interesting was the movie detailing Hitler's history with the town and included interviews with people who remember living through that transformation. But the highlight is seeing the bunkers! With a car, you'd have plenty of time to stop there and still see a lot of Salzburg. I took the bus, so I spent a lot more time in transit.
I still had time to take another bus from Salzburg out to the Freilicht Museum for the afternoon - a different kind of history. I recommend it too.
