Salzburg or berchtesgaden

Staying 3 nights in Munich in September.Should we stay in Salzburg and visit Berchtesgaden or vice.versa?
Also, may be interesting in Fussen or somewhere around there before we leave from Munich. Any suggestions?

Not sure if you mean staying somewhere in lieu of Munich, or in addition to. Salzburg is a major European city, one of the most beautiful full of history, art, music, culture, and wonderful restaurants. Berchtesgaden is a pretty town in a beautiful area, but in itself, not as interesting a place to stay, in my opinion. If you're just talking day trips from Munich, that's a different story.

I would stay in Salzburg and visit Berchtesgaden. There are far many more things to do in and around Salzburg.

In addition to Munich. Thanks. Is there a third place you would suggest, keep in mind we are leaving from Munich, so I thought we might be able to go west alittle before heading back to Munich. I would love to do Switzerland but I don't think I have time.

We love the Berchtesgaden area and always stay here and day trip to Salzburg, etc.

Stay in Salzburg. There's not much to see in Berchtesgaden, and you could easily do a day trip from Salzburg. Salzburg and its environs offer lots. The city itself is beautiful, and there should be opportunities for concerts there that time of year. If you're a Sound of Music fan, there's a beautiful but rather cheesy tour for that. The salt mines near there are also gorgeous, as are the lake Reas nearby.

I have not stayed in Füssen, but I like Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the foot of the Zugspitze and a lot of recreation opportunities.

"There's not much to see in Berchtesgaden"

The town itself is beautiful to explore. You can take a boat trip on Königsee - visit St. Bartholmä and the Obersee. There's the Eagles Nest and the Dokumentation Center. Closer to town is a Salt Mine and a nice Therme (spa). We spent half a day hiking in the Wimbachklamm. Three times I've gone to Berchtesgaden for two days, and I can't wait to go back.

I once spent a day in Salzburg; now I only use it to change trains.

It really comes down to your own interests. Besides the things already mentioned, Salzburg has a fortress, and Mozart's birthplace is there, too.
