I only have a day and a half since coming via train from Venice. Is this doable?
arrive around 2pm - visit Hohensalzburg Fortress then the next day, can we do a half day tour to the Eagle's Nest and then also visit the salt mines in Hallstatt?
Recommendations on where to stay and how to get around the city?

We always stay in B&B's when visiting Salzburg, and we just walk around this rather compact town. See Booking.com or AirBnB.com for places to stay. I would think there are no bad places to stay in this most accommodating of cities.

That would be very hard (if not impossible) to pull off. Berchtesgaden and Hallstatt are in opposite directions. There is, however, a perfectly good salt mine experience in Berchtesgaden that could be tacked onto a visit at Eagle's Nest.
If I understand: drive yourself from Salzburg to Eagles Nest, then on to Salt Mine and round trip back to Salzburg in a day? Yes it’s doable as long as the tours you want run at the times you want. A long and rushed day, the long summer sun will be your friend - no way in winter. But I’m. It one to talk anyone out of anything.
I guess drive time is not as bad as I thought. 3 hrs 9 min (right now -- 6 am Austria time) for the round trip. I guess you could pull it off. If the salt mine is the main reason to go to Hallstatt, though, I would still hit the one at Berchtesgaden. I enjoyed it. If you want to see a lake... Königssee is in the Berchtesgaden neighborhood and as majestic (if not more so -- at least to me), as Hallstätter See.
