What Edgar said -- Der Alte Fuchs is one of our favorites. Very Austrian. Or the wurst stands in the market behind the Mozart birth house.

Can't remember a meal in Salzburg that we didn't like! : ) Also recommend Zipfer Bierhaus for some of their creative dishes, too. And, the Old Fox has wonderful apple strudel, too. Both of those areas are nice to explore.

We also really enjoyed Der Alte Fuchs in Salzburg. Great atmosphere and food. My husband had a trio of wursts and I had some spaetzle and it was all delicious.

This restaurant was recommended to us by a young man behind the front desk at our hotel. My husband and I laugh every time we talk about our dinner there, because when he told us about the restaurant he said, or we heard, "Der Alte Fuchs translated to English means, The Older Folks. I think you will like it". We're in our 30s and didn't quite know how to take that or what type of "Older Folks" food we should expect, but went anyway because he said it was so good. Once we arrived we saw a theme of foxes and figured out that he was saying "The Older Fox". We still just call it "The Older Folks".

Not a restaurant recommendation but a bit of a sweet snack that you can buy from a street vendor. I think it was called a "Mozartbretzel" (Mozart pretzel, obviously), but I may be wrong. Basically, a sweet, chocolate covered soft pretzel filled with jam. Delicious, and I've never seen it sold anywhere other than Salzburg.

I was only in Salzburg a few hours, so I only ate lunch there. But for the best view in town while you eat, try the outdoor restaurant on the south side of Hohensalzburg (the fortress that overlooks the city). You'll be treated to a magnificent Alpine vista. The food is standard Austrian fare and good enough if not world-beating.

But for the best view in town while you eat....

I don't have a first hand confirmation, but our SOM tour guide suggested that the best view while having a drink can be had from the Hotel Stein's roof top bar. The hotel is across from Old Town next to the Staatsbrücke (bridge) and a few block from the Old Fox.

The legendary Hotel Stein and its breathtaking rooftop bar, are
directly situated in the heart of the old town. Enjoy the view over
Salzburg’s roof tops and the Fortress Hohensalzburg and stay in our
stylish hotel.
