Salzburg, Lake Hallstatt & Vienna Restaurant Recommendations Please !

Our group of 4 adults will be traveling in September 2023 in Salzburg, Lake Hallstatt and Vienna. Would love a few restaurant recommendations. Looking for both mid-tier and also for that special splurge meal. I have researched the options in the newly published RS guidebook but look forward to your feedback. Thanks in advance!

Salzburg-
Augustiner Braustubl- Augustinergasse 4-6. It’s really fun. Has several different food stall like offerings in a bit of a maze of hallways where you buy what you want then find a table in one of the many communal dining room areas. Only has Augustinerbrau which is really good. One place in the stubl to purchase but it’s quite the operation. If you don’t drink beer, there are other options. Go there hungry.

Bärenwirt- Müllner Hauptstraße 8 - Has been there for a very long time and the food is always good. Used to be owned by a couple of sisters, I think, and when my husband attended school in Salzburg his junior year in college, this was THE place to go because the food was good and there was a lot of it. Portions are slightly more normal today.

Bäckerei Siegfried Ursprunger- Gstättengasse 4- The oldest bakery in Salzburg. Not exactly easy to find but oh so good. We ended up there four mornings in a row! Definitely where the locals show up.

Two restaurants on the ‘new’ side of the river that have good food are Zum Fidelen Affen at Priesterhausgasse 8 and in the same area Gasthof Alter Fuchs at Linzergasse 4-7.

We didn’t have any special splurge meals in Salzburg bit the Goldener Hirsch comes to mind as well as The Blaue Gans, both on Getreidegasse.

Rather than Hallstatt, you might find more choices in St. Wolfgang and around that lake. Hallstatt must have good restaurants but it has become a bit overrun with bus group tourists. Yet, at night they will have gone so could be special. If you do find ones there you like, I would like to know as would others on here. Thanks for that.

Enjoy your trip!

If you are tired of German food in Salzburg and want something different, I highly recommend the Afro Cafe. Great coffee and tea. Really good food, too. I had an excellent fish curry there, and I also ate the best falafel of my life there.

If the weather is nice, the wine gardens just outside of Vienna are pleasant. The views are amazing and they are accessible by public bus. It’s a nice break from the city.
