Traveling by train to Salzburg in February. Need ideas for a good hotel and travel options around the city.
Feb is low-ish season. However, hotels in Salzburg tend to be quite expensive compared to other cities. It's ok to stay outside the old town as long as you can reach it on foot.
I used my miles to stay at the Holiday Inn for two nights. It's nothing fancy but did the job.
We stayed in bed and breakfasts when in Salzburg. It's one of the most hospitable cities we've ever been in. We too have been there in February, so you need to dress warm. The center city is small and walkable.
It's been quite awhile since we visited Salzburg and Tirol, and it's about time we returned. The region south of Salzburg is absolutely one of the most beautiful places we've ever visited.
Last December we stayed at the Alstadt hotel Weisse Taube and loved it.
We stayed at a lovely Guesthouse in Salzburg awhile back and it was really nice and at a good price.

Another happy customer of Alstadt hotel Weisse Taube. We took it easy and just took a taxi from the train station to the hotel. Everything in town was walkable, except we took a bus out to see the gazebo from The Sound of Music.
We purchased the Salzburg Card and ended up seeing some smaller museums we would have passed over. I was just thinking about the vintage displays yesterday that were at the tiny Christmas museum.
We love Salzburg, but if you’re wanting a day trip, we liked St. Wolfgang. We took the bus to St. Gilgen & the boat onto St. Wolfgang (and stayed there a couple of nights.)
Thank you all for the advice. What about Hotel Hohenstauffen? Says it's walking distance from the train station.
Book a hotel in the old town.
Great hotel in a quiet neighborhood, but close to the Linder Strasse. Take taxi when you arrive and then you can walk to the train station after that.
I’m with Fred. We love the Auersperg Hotel. Also love Hotel Elefant and the NH Collection.
We are 4 seniors interested in an overnight trip to Salzburg from Vienna, probably December 11-12.
My thought was to travel to Salzburg by train, stay in Old Town, wander about, take the funicular up and have dinner at the restaurant with a great view.
The next day we have time for a day tour before taking a late afternoon train back to Vienna.
We know it’s cold, and we will have been in Vienna for 10 days prior to this short excursion.
No interest in anything “ Sound of Music” related.
A trip to Hallstadt, a view of the Alps, a charming Christmas Market, a couple good meals and a Mozart concert are items of interest.
Recommendations and suggestions are welcome.
Thank you!
