I am leaving for Munich on the 19th of september. I was hoping to see some of the Almbetrieb festival. It would not have to be much, I just wanted to see some of the costumes and perhaps a few cows. i will be in salzburg from sept 16 to 19. thank you , any suggestions are welcome. we are using train not car for transportation.
Hi,
Never been but found thses sites. While some are in Bavaria, the Berchtesgadenland (Berchtesgaden area) is very close to Salzburg.

You will find that every Alpine village in the region has one if you look so it should be easy to find. Not all will be accessible via rail though and each village has different date. Use the keywords "Bauernherbst", "salzburgerland" and "almabtrieb" and you should find something. We went to one in Filzmoos in 2013 and it was excellent.
You will be in Salzburg too early and miss the Rupertikirtag. http://www.rupertikirtag.at/
Yes, this link does seem to have a fine list with dates of alpine Almabtrieb, Viehscheid, or Alpabzug events. http://www.almabtriebe.de/almabtrieb-termine-2015/
You may discover more, say if you know a location you will be in, google it and one of the three words above + 2015 to see if anything new pops up.
Will you have the opportunity of dipping south of Munich when you are there? In 2011, I researched this extensively and finally chose a small Almabtrieb on the outskirts of Innsbruck in the town of Mutters - based on date and ease of travel. It was a very local event, though I found other folks from Innsbruck on the small train with me heading up to the festival. The cows were such fun. They seem to pose with their lovely headdresses on.
I hope you are able to fit this in. Let us know. Enjoy. Debbie
Not that it would be bad to see the Innsbruck area, but I don't think you will have to travel that far to find a good almabtrieb. I researched it back in 2013 and there were several to be found in the Salzburg region. Just read carefully as some of the smaller ones advertised sheep instead of cows. It is worth the effort to research as it is a memorable experience.

You might want to look in the Berchtesgaden area as well.
