We will be in Salzburg for a week starting December 12, 2014. Want to see Salzburg and some nearby towns. Romantic get-away. I'm proposing. Need suggestions on where to go/transportation/bed and breakfasts or small hotels.

If you want something special (it'd be a bit of a splurge but worth it), get a room at the Goldener Hirsch Hotel in Old Town Salzburg (a leaping golden stag is their emblem). Hubby booked a room there for our 30th anniversary (and my 50th birthday) trip. And I'd suggest the Platz in front of the Dom in the middle of the Christmas Market as a lovely place to propose in winter. Or Mirabel Gardens near the Pegasus statue (they sang DO Ri Mi on the stairs in front of it in Sound of Music). If you can get to Mondsee, the church there is lovely and is the one used for the wedding scene in Sound of Music (can you tell I'm a bit of a fan- we even used many of the songs in our wedding and had our ring bearer and flower girl in traditional Austrian outfits).

If you are planning anything romantic, take into account that everything in and around the Old Town of Salzburg will be crowded with visitors to the Christmas markets. By 7 p.m. there's hardly room to stand. If you want the proposal to be heard, early afternoon outside or over dinner is your best bet.
