Salzburg hotel recommendation

My husband and I are going to be in Salzburg 2nd week of August for 3 nights. I would appreciate your recommendation of a hotel (with breakfast if possible) in the Old Town, walking distance to major attractions, moderate price and possibly close to the Metro station. Thanks for your help.

For clarification, I think that's mostly true. There is some limited S-bahn connectivity to places like the big EuroPark parking complex, but mainly to outlying urban areas and other nearby cities.

But for most people who aren't just daytrippers, yes, it's gonna be bus stops that you're concerned about being close to.

When the OP said Metro, I believe they were talking about a subway, which, of course, doesn’t exist in Salzburg. I hardly think they were referring to an S-Bahn, which is obscure for tourists.

Hi montaquintet,

My family and I stayed in Old Town at Altstadthotel Weisse Taube when we went, but that was 6 years ago. It was recommended, at least at the time, not sure now, by RS guidebook and it was delightful. We all felt it was our favorite place we stayed in our 3 week trip to Austria (and Venice/Dolomites). The breakfast area felt like a cave, but it was well decorated, the food was great and the service was wonderful.

We stayed at that same Alstadhotel Weisse Taube in December 2022 and absolutely loved it!

We did too in summer 2022 - thanks to recommendations from here. It was a nice hotel.

We took a trip with a college choir to Austria and Slovenia in December. When in Salzburg, we stayed at the Hotel Neutor.

It is up the hill from the main part of Salzburg, just an easy 10 minute walk to Salzburg Cathedral in the heart of the city. It's on a major bus line so getting around to other areas was easy.

Here's the good:
Breakfast was really good. The rooms were clean and a good size. The staff was friendly. As mentioned, it is very convenient.

Here's the OK, but not great:
The bathroom layout was tight and the shower was a little small. While the room was clean, it was a little tired. The elevator was small, but we were on the second floor and it was an easy walk up the stairs. We stayed in the older part of Hotel Neuter, there are two buildings across the street from each other. I'm thinking the newer part would be nicer. I'd rate our part of the hotel as 2 1/2-3 stars.

Since we were with a group, our accommodations were selected by the tour company. Still, if we return to Salzburg, I'd choose to stay there since it is convenient, has a nice breakfast and is moderately priced.

I stayed at Hotel Elefant in September 2022 and it was excellent, especially the location right behind Mozart's birthplace! Single room was a bargain, unsure about double rates. Did not try the expensive breakfast though.
