Salzburg Hotel - Hotel in the City or Pension 15 min from City Center?

We will be traveling to Salzburg for a few days this October. We are looking through various options for hotels and have come across a few good options so far, including Hotel Mozart and the Goldenes Theater Hotel in the city center and Pension Bloberger Hof and The Sallerhof which are about 15-20 minutes from the city center. I'm curious which option is better. I know there are benefits and drawbacks to both, but has anyone stayed outside the city center and regretted it?

I'm leaning toward the Bloberger Hof as it is right on the bus route and only a 15 min ride into the city. We have the option to book their honeymoon suite for the same price (or cheaper) than most of the city hotels. All of the hotels we're looking at have good reviews on TripAdvisor, but this one has the best overall. Any advice would be most appreciated!

Even though it is only a 15 min. bus ride, that probably does not include the time walking to bus stop and waiting for bus and walking to hotel.... I have always stayed in the city center in Salzburg, I have found that sometimes I want to take a break in the day, and after resting a bit decide to go back out for a few hours. Not sure I would do that if I had to deal with the bus. Although the room advantage sounds great, I would base it on how much time I spend in the room vs. seeing the city. I love Salzburg and have been a number of times. It is such a wonderful place to wander around and enjoy.

Walking time to the bus stop from the Bloberger Hof is about 30 seconds.

My experience over several stays there is that the bus arrives in both directions predictably right on time, although in a fierce thunderstorm a few years ago I remember being happy that the driver slowed down just a little because of the puddles and by the time I got off it had diminished to just light spitting.

The breakfasts are excellent, the staff courteous and helpful and the evening dinner should you want it is extremely tasty.

The rooms are large anyway, with big wood furniture and big cushions, and the honeymoon suite is what it says it is.

I've never stayed in the centre of Salzburg, I've put plenty of money back in my pocket, and I've never regretted it.

Thanks Nigel. Good to hear that the bus was not difficult to navigate. Also good to hear that the dinner was worth it. That was something that we were looking at and considering as a benefit to staying there.

For most of the rest of our trip we will be staying in urban hotels & apartments in the city centers. This jumped out at me as an opportunity to change it up a bit without giving up much time commuting in and out.

We stayed at the Sallerhof because we had a car and loved the breakfasts and pillows (!!) and their attention to detail ! We drove into Salzburg - about a 5 minute drive - and parked in the free parking right by the river. Simple.

We have also stayed at Weisse Taube 4 times and loved their breakfasts as well. We enjoyed walking out the door and being in the middle of everything that we came to visit !

On the same street as the Bloberger Hof, Moosestrasse, is also pension Frau Ballwein with the bus stop right in front of the property. Quiet, in the country and a large buffet breakfast in the morning makes it a joy to stay at. At the Bloberger Hof, I believe they also serve dinners to their guests. Enjoy your trip!
