We are looking for the best way to visit these three places in 6 days. We will start in Salzburg and end in Vienna. We could take a day trip to Hallstatt or stay overnight there and then go on to Vienna.

Six days is just about right for that trip. I would spend two days in Salzburg then one in Hallstatt and finish in Vienna. Salzburg is a favorite of mine and you will really enjoy the city. Very walkable and easy to get around. The three are the last three stops on Rick's Germany. Austria, Switzerland tour. He has great info in his guide book about all three places. You will have 6 wonderful days. Enjoy

We prefer to stay overnight in Halstatt, rather than backtracking.

What about taking an early bus to Hallstatt staying for the day and then taking a train to Vienna? Would that be too much? Do you have a place you like to stay in Hallstatt?
