Salzburg-Hallstaff-Vienna

Some advice, please. Wife and I flying to Salzburg on Aug. 25(26) for a few days there, then a stop in Hallstatt, a few days in Vienna and a few days in Prague before starting a Rick Steves tour on Sept. 7. No car; using public transportation. Wondering if one night in Hallstatt is enough -- in light of the time to train from Salzburg and time to train to Vienna. Also, any lodging advice for Salzburg, Hallstatt and Vienna in the about $100-a-night cost? We have lodging in Prague. Thanks.

Do a search on trip advisor for hotels in those cities. $100 is roughly 80€ and although there will be options I'm not sure they will be in great locations. Since you are depending on public transport i assume you will want to stay near the city centers.

Kathy: Will do. And your suggestion of staying near city centers is a good one.

Hallstatt can get very busy with day trippers. while there are things to see/do ( salt mine tour etc- which was very good) it doesn't take that long to walk around the town. its quite small but very nice once the day trippers have left. so if time is short then one night might do.
I think you will find the main town of Hallstat would cost more than you would like? we stayed right in the main square and got hotel transport in and out of the town ( left our car in the carpark outside the main town)

hope this helps

In Hallstatt, take a look at Gasthof Pension Gruner Anger. It's a lovely B&B that's about a 5 minute walk to the center of town. Large room, immaculately clean, good breakfast and great price point.

In Vienna we stayed at the K&T Boardinghouse last September, after the Best of Eastern Europe tour. It was very convenient to U-bahn, and also easy to walk into the central part of the city. And, it met our price point (and should meet yours). It is not fancy but offered everything we needed -- spacious, clean, friendly and conveniently located.

I stayed at this hotel in Vienna and enjoyed it. I am going back this year and staying here again.
