Hi! We would love an easy hike or two in the mountains between our stay in Prague and Munich (taking the train, no car). We'll have 2 or 3 days and are considering Salzburg as it sounds easy with the train and has many lovely attributes. Can you easily get to a mountain hike from there without taking a full day, to go to another area? If so, any suggestions would be appreciated! If not, any other smaller towns you'd recommend we visit for light hiking and relaxing near that train route? Would love it to be in Austria, but we are flexible with that. Thanks!
Berchtesgaden is about 45 minutes outside of Salzburg. The scenery is spectacular with the lake scenery against the Alps. Have a great trip!
Werfen is about an hour south of Salzburg. It is where the opening scene from The Sound of Music was filmed, where she twirls in the meadow. It’s a stunning setting. There is a trail called The Sound of Music Trail.
If you manage to get there, the Freilicht museum (open air museum) near Salzburg is a nice walk between reconstructions of historic forms of country homes in an hilly park. There is also a cable car at nearby Untersberg that will bring you on the top of the mountain closing Salzburg on the south side, nice sights but I understand hikes on the top are somewhat limited.
Bus 151 to the top of Gaisbergspitz. Great trail hiking down the mountain. Very easy. If you become tired, there are many bus stops along the road that can take you back down. South to Untersberg where you can cable car up and hike down.
