Salzburg day trip Salt mine and hellbrunn castle

We would like to hit a salt mine and then hit hellbrunn castle on the way back. Seems like the salt mine in Berchtesgaden would be easier as it's a direct bus but I keep seein Hallein mentioned. Just trying to do easiest as traveling with 3 children.

melissa,

Visiting the Salt Mine in Berchtesgaden should be very easy from Salzburg, as there are good transportation links. If you're going to visit two sights in one day, you likely won't have long at either one, after transportation times are considered.

As I recall, Hellbrunn Palace can be reached on the HO/HO Bus tours, which is very convenient from downtown Salzburg. There's also a Zoo there, so you'll probably need more time to visit that.

If you plan on visiting Berchtesgaden Salt Mines you should definitely go to their website and reserve your timed entry ticket. The lines can be very very long during peak tourist season.

Catch the 840 bus just across the street from Salzburg Main Train Station, it will take you all the way to the mines.

Would the hallein one be easier or is the Berchtesgaden easier? We are staying right by central train station

Yes, about 40 minutes or so by public transport to Hallein from the centre of Salzburg. The same route passes by Hellbrun on the way back.

According to the Austrian Rail website, it's a 48 minute trip to the Bad Dürrnberg Salzbergwerk near Hallein. Take the S3 24 minutes from Salzburg Hbf to Hallein Bahnhof, then the #41 bus 10 minutes to the Bad Dürrnberg Salzbergwerk bus stop, then 250m (4 minutes) the the saltworks.

The salt works in Berchtesgaden is close to the Hbf. The bus (RVO 840) coming into town from Salzburg stops there.
