Salzburg day trip from Danube River cruise

We are planning on taking a Danube river cruise next year. Has anyone taken a day trip to Salzburg while on the river cruise? The tour option that day is a tour of the Audi factory, which we can skip. It looks like we will be in Regensburg that day. Train, bus, private guide? Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! Jeff.

Salzburg is well over 200 km away from Regensburg. If you rented a car, it would take about 2 1/2 hours each way to drive ( not counting the time to pick up and drop off the car). The train would take over 3 hours each way ( not counting the time needed between the ship and the train station and buying train tickets). Are you overnighting in Regensburg or departing late in the evening? If not, then I don't think this would be very practical. But if your time in port is long enough, you'd likely have enough time for a quick walking tour of the Old Town area.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering how far it was to Salzburg. I agree, it sounds too far away for a day trip. Are there any other towns close by to Regensburg that are interesting?

Your cruise probably stops in Nuremberg? Its about half the distance from Regensburg as Salzburg is. Munich is about the same distance.

Do you spend any time on Cruise Critic.com? You could join the roll call for your cruise to see what others on your sailing are planning. Often roll call members will form their own private tours. CC also has a river ports of call forum that might give you some ideas.

Why not just enjoy Regensburg? It is a lovely town.

We did a Danube Xmas Market River Cruise a couple years ago and we did take a day trip from the boat into Salzburg as part of the included itinerary. Once in Salzburg, we had a fantastic guided tour of the city, hitting the highlights, learning some amazing history, a lunch at the oldest restaurant in Europe, then had a decent amount of 'on our own' time to explore the Xmas markets before catching the bus back to the boat for a later dinner.

Regensburg was another complete day, followed by Passau, etc . . . it is a fantastic trip
