Salzburg Cathedral tourist restrictions

Hello, I was in Salzburg very recently. One has to pay now to enter the Salzburger Dom (Cathedral), unless one is attending a worship service. Seriously.

How much was the entry fee?

Westminster Abbey in London has charged an entry fee for years. Starting Oct 1 the price increases to 30 GBP.

My sister and I did not stay around long enough to find out. She has lived in Salzburg for a very long time as a singer, and she has sung in the Dom many times. She was pretty irked when she saw that we had to pay to get in as non-worshippers. So we just left, irritated.

We have visited a lot of churches throughout Europe that ask for an entry fee unless you’re attending a service. It’s never been much and with the amount of tourists now I’m sure it helps with maintenance,

Cathedral Ticket
Since October 23, 2021, we have been collecting a maintenance fee for visits to Salzburg Cathedral, which will ensure the preservation and care of the magnificent building in the future. Visiting the cathedral costs € 5 for adults. Children and young people up to 18 years of age are free . You can get tickets at the ticket offices in the cathedral vestibule. There are also several interesting offers to choose from there, such as audio guides and guided tours that allow you to experience the cathedral in a special way.

5E sounds pretty reasonable. The extra traffic causes more work for the housekeeping and maintenance staff at a minimum and I'm happy to contribute. I don't remember if they have contribution boxes there or not but they must not have been getting enough donations to cover extra costs.

I think 5€ sounds reasonable. We arrive in Salzburg on Wednesday and I don’t have a problem paying that if we decide to revisit it. We have been there before.

I am going to Berlin in a month and was doing some research. The Berlin Cathedral has a 10 Euro entrance fee.

I think it would be more of a surprise if a large and popular cathedral did not charge a fee. I'm also one of those happy to pay for the privilege of seeing these beautiful cathedrals and contributing to their upkeep, which must be considerable. And £5 is not very much.

In fact, if there is no entry fee in cathedrals or churches, I almost always leave a donation.

Mardee, in England last year a number of churches had installed ApplePay and Google Pay donation terminals. York Minster cleverly had some outside, too!! I made sure to donate at them to encourage continued use of them! Plus, of course, no cash needed.

I find it fascinating that anyone would be surprised that a church might charge those who come for a purpose other than worship a maintenance fee. People who are using the church as intended are not being asked to pay.

I have been to the 10 AM Sunday Mass 2 times. It was awesome. 2 or 3 hundred citizens of Salzburg in old time era costumes attended and then did an exit parade around the area. The music was organ, small chamber orchestra and a nice chamber choir doing music by Mozart. Of course they did not charge because it was a service but it was so wonderful I contributed 25E which was much less than a great concert would have cost especially in the exact place that Mozart played some of his music. Great acoustics also if you arrive early and get the right seats. Beautiful Cathedral and very much worth the price they charge for admittance.
