Salzburg Austria Salt Mine & Food

My friend told me to take a salt mine tour. It looks fun. There is one with Viator and one with Panorama tours. Which one did you take and what's your preference. If one has less people I'd probably prefer that tour. Did you take the Sound of Music? I was thinking of taking the 1/2 day tour unless you think a full day would be better. I will be there 2 1/2 days and would like to walk around as Rick suggested. Where is your favorite place to eat? Any other great ideas! Thanks!

I will only say that I like to book directly with the person/company providing the service whether its hotels, attraction tickets or tours. Viator sells tickets, keeps a cut and subcontracts with local companies. At the least, I would find out from Viator, who the tour company would be. I did take a Panorama Sound of Music tour. I thought it was enjoyable but I also know people really enjoy the Sound of Music bike tours. The only limitation of the bike tour is they do not go to Mondsee so they do not see the "wedding church".

Favorite place to eat: Alter Fuchs (The Old Fox)
http://www.alterfuchs.at/de
Linzer G. 47-49, 5020 Salzburg, Austria

'Alte Fuchs', based in the famous 'Linzergasse', offers their guests
comfort in combination with serving local treats.

We took the Panorama Sounds of Music Tour 1A during the winter During the winter a minibus. Summer big bus. It includes an excursion out into the country side. I'm sure you will hear about the SOM tours from other forum contributors.

I did the salt mine visit just over the border in Germany. Just rocked up, paid the money, put on the funny overalls, and did it.

No tour company required.

I’ve done the Panorama tour 3 times. Enjoyed all 3
For the salt mine in Hallein, you can get a combo ticket at the tourist office at the Salzburg train station - train, bus, salt mine and return. I’ve done the salt mine 3 times. Lots of fun.

Thanks all. I think I will take the independent way there, train, bus, etc. I did notice when looking at the tours that the viator and panorama had the same pictures which led me to think they were the same.

Terry,

The two restaurants that stood out on out recent trip to Salzburg were Stieglkeller (on the escarpment next to the funicular station) and Sternbräu (in the market area. While both were a little on the touristy side, they both had good food and good service for the money. There also appeared to be a large number of locals dining in each. I have no qualms about recommending either.

Viator is just a "middle man" company selling other company's tours. It does not offer any tours of its own.

There are multiple Sound of Music Options.

Panorama -- big bus in the summer, minibus in the winter

Fräulein Maria's Bicycle Tour: http://www.mariasbicycletours.com/

Bob's Tours: https://www.bobstours.com/tours.php

I have only done the Panorama tour, which I found great, but others on the forum have done both Maria's and Bob's (and found them great).

Use the search bar at the top of page and search for "Sound of Music Tour" -- you'll find many old threads.

I also enjoyed Stieglkeller restaurant and I'll add on the SOM tour, the wedding scene is a favorite part of the movie for me. I really wanted to see the church in Mondsee which the bike tour doesn't do. However, I'm told there is a bus route to Mondsee, but I can't confirm.

Agree with Edgar about Old Fox -- we build it into every visit.

I think you should try the Augustiner Bräu Kloster Mülln. It opens 14:30-15:00 depending on the day. Big beer halls and famous Biergarten. It's mostly self-serve and unique, with several Imbiss style places for food and of course bread goods. Some cut/chop the Braten/meat into byte size pieces you can eat with a food pick. You grab a Bierkrug from the rack, rinse it off at the fountain and get in the line for the beer. It can get packed...

Also nearby for Backhendl (fried chicken) and good local food is the Bärenwirt open since 1663 (huge knodel there too). It does not look like much from the outside, but step in. They have a veranda overlooking the Salzach too. Make reservations if plan to go for Mittagessen or dinner!

You should take a look at the The Sound Of Music Store in the old city across from the Spielzeug Museum. They have a nice free museum/display upstairs of the movie and original Maria and Family.

If the weather's good I like to sit outside Café Tomaselli and watch people crossing the square.

There are three salt mines near Salzburg: Werfen, Berchtesgaden and Hallstatt. I have been to Berchtesgaden & Hallstatt.

To get to the mine at Hallstatt, you ride up the mountain in a funicular. Then up an elevator (or stairs). The walk up a pretty steep hill about 1/4 mile. This may be important for some. I adore Hallstatt, but the town is very popular and will probably be crowded.

At Berchtesgaden, the entrance is flat. There is a boat ride inside the mine. The town is very cute also.

At both locations, you should be able to reserve a time for your tour and pay online. You don’t need a tour company unless you are looking for transportation.

I did Bob's SOM tour and really enjoyed it. It was a minivan, as opposed to a big bus. That was a big plus for me.
