Salzburg and Vienna Tours

This will be our first time in Salzburg and Vienna in June 2020.

Would you suggest a walking tour or a hop on/off bus to see each of these cities on our first day there to get an overview of each of these cities?

Thank you.

Well, I never have done HOHO, so that's my bias. I usually walk. I feel like I see more. In Vienna, I rarely use public transportation, the old town area is pretty compact. In Salzburg, I did do a Sound of Music tour. It's kitschy, but if you like the movie at all, most people do find it fun. For both those cities, I used the RS guide to sort through activities and come up with a plan. RS does have a walking tour of Salzburg that we used.

With 3 days at each city, listen to the RS audio tours before you go and look over the available guidebooks to come up with a wish list of sights.. There will a number of HOHO tours available (at least in Vienna; Salzburg is really quite small). Decide what you want to do then book your tours. I like to start with the RS audio tours in the city, because I can pause them and go at my own pace. And look around at life where i am visiting. Good coffee stops too.

As I recall, the old central part of Salzburg is mostly pedestrian or otherwise has restricted traffic. Outlying things might be accessible by HOHO if there is one, but I'd just walk it.

RS has a good guided tour of Vienna, which is mostly on trams. You can ride around and see a lot.

In Vienna, if you like wine, go to the heurigen. These are wine taverns. In Salzburg, we really enjoyed the beer hall.

In both cities, the interesting sites and historic cores are pedestrianized, so HOHO buses are ineffective. Exploring by foot is the way to go.

RS has a Ring tour on audio -- two trams, he tells you where to change. We do this every time we are in Vienna.

Thank you to everyone for your responses.

1) I will definitely download and listen to RS audio tour.

2) Sounds to me like a walking tour vs. HOHO bus is the way to see more of the inner city due to its size.

Thank you again!

June can't come soon enough...if seeing the beauty is as much fun as planning this trip we are in for a real treat! :)
